AMSOIL Celebrates
35th Anniversary
AMSOIL sponsored
drivers meet
face-to-face with
AMSOIL Dealers
July 17-19 2008
marked a historical
point in the history
of synthetic
lubrication as
AMSOIL INC.
celebrated its 35th
Anniversary with an
unrivaled convention
that featured
Dealers,
new products, an
extraordinary plant
tour and more than
30 race teams and
series.
On
Thursday,
approximately 1,000
AMSOIL Dealers,
employees, friends
and family were on
hand for the opening
ceremonies which
featured the
high-energy
introduction of the
corporate race teams
and series partners.
Dealers learned
firsthand about
AMSOIL's involvement
in
Championship Off
Road Racing,
the new official oil
sponsorships of
Daytona Bike Week
and
Sturgis Bike
Rally and met some
old (Mike

and new (Scott
Douglas, Mike Oberg)
racers.
From there, the
group was led to the
Winning Formula
Expo, which featured
the racers and
representatives of
the corporately
sponsored series who
were on hand to talk
about their efforts
and sign autographs.
In attendance, among
others, were
Brady Smith,
Scheuring
Speedsports,
PJ Wanderscheid,
Sudden Impact Racing,
Chad Hord,
Judnick Motorsports,
Darrell Nelson,
AJ Diemel,
Bob Richardson,
Bob Teague, and
Terry

The trackside
announcers Robi
Powers and Faron
Meeks also lent
their incredible
talents to both the
Expo and the opening
ceremonies. Powers
and Meeks helped
introduce the racers
and also worked the
Expo floor as "pit
reporters." Their
reports were
broadcast on large
50-foot screens on
each end of the expo
hall.
"The AMSOIL 35th
Anniversary
Convention was a
great success," said
Jeremy Meyer, AMSOIL
Race Program
Manager. "We believe
everyone from the
race teams to the
Dealers to the
AMSOIL employees has
been energized by
the entire
convention. We had
great speakers
throughout the show,
and our Dealers
walked away with a
great amount of
knowledge and
enthusiasm that we
feel will translate
to their AMSOIL
businesses."
Also unveiled was
the introduction of
the new
AMSOIL Dominator
Racing Oils.
These three new oils
(RD50,
RD30 and
RD20) were
designed to expand
the Dominator line
and will offer three
new viscosities that
race teams have been
asking for.

As the leader in two-cycle oil technology, AMSOIL has performed extensive research in developing a new line of revolutionary, specialized oils called the "Fabulous Four." AMSOIL INTERCEPTOR Synthetic 2-Cycle Oil (AIT) was the first new oil to be introduced. It is primarily recommended as an injector oil or at a 50:1 mix ratio in carbureted, electronic fuel injected (EFI) and direct fuel injected (DFI) snowmobiles, personal watercraft, motorcycles and ATV's. Formulated with wax-free premium quality synthetic esters and a specialized additive package, INTERCEPTOR is designed to address the exhaust valve sticking problems associated with certain snowmobile models.
AMSOIL HP Injector Synthetic 2-Cycle Oil (HPI), DOMINATOR Synthetic 2-Cycle Racing Oil (TDR) and Saber Professional (ATP) and Outboard (ATO) Synthetic 100:1 Pre-Mix 2-Cycle Oils
complete the Fabulous Four lineup. |

Five Podiums Await AMSOIL in Crandon
Hord and Douglas win, Oberg second
Labor Day weekend brought a little extra work for the AMSOIL Super Team members as they decided to get a few extra laps in while the Championship Off Road Racing (CORR) series took some time off for the holiday. Scott Douglas, Mike Oberg and Chad Hord proved to be a powerful trio as they headed to the World Series of Off Road Racing’s BorgWarner Shootout in Crandon, Wis.
Driving his BOSS Snowplow/AMSOIL/Kumho Pro Light truck, Hord started the weekend off with a stellar run in the “Decision at Sundown” on Friday night. Hord put together a tough battle with nemesis Jeff Kincaid in the non-points shootout and fought through traffic to finish second. On Saturday, Hord redeemed his near miss by overcoming a back row starting spot to take the win and another World Championship ring. Sunday’s race brought a third podium to the AMSOIL pits as Hord again tangled with the back markers before finishing second.
Pro 4x4 brought out the high horsepower of Douglas and his AMSOIL/Kumho Ford F-150. On Saturday, Douglas held the second spot for much of the race but was forced to the pits after a tussle with another driver cracked the fiberglass hood, blocking the truck’s cooling system and his line of sight. The El Cajon, Calif. native and fan favorite delivered his signature smooth style in Sunday’s class race by taking home the win and his third straight win on a Sunday. All that was left was a shot at his third BorgWarner Cup, but an accident directly in front of him by Johnny Greaves ended his chance at history as Douglas got tied up with the carnage and was forced out of the race.
“It was a good weekend for us,” said Douglas after Sunday’s Cup race. “We weren’t here to fight for a championship, but we came out with a win and a lot of new information that will help us be even faster in the final CORR races of the year.”
In Pro 2wd, Oberg showed off his top end speed with three strong races. On Saturday, he started in the back row and found himself in 10th coming into the first turn. On the third lap, however, Oberg started dialing in the truck and began picking off the field. Within four laps, the Eagle River, Wis. driver had one of the fastest trucks on the track and was looking at a podium finish. A large rock would play the spoiler after it kicked up and damaged the transmission, forcing Oberg to pull off.
On Sunday, Oberg would get redemption. Again starting in the back row due to not racing full time in the WSORR, Oberg received perfect bite off the starting line and came through the first turn in fourth. From there, he moved his AMSOIL Chevrolet into second with three laps to go and stayed there for the rest of the race. In the Cup race, Oberg ran fourth for most of the race, but another rock pierced the transmission casing and ended the day for the championship driver.
Congratulations go out to Dan Vanden Huevel. The Flying Dutchman won his first WSORR points championship with a pair of strong finishes in Crandon. The Dutchman also finished third in the BorgWarner Cup race, which was swept by Pro 2wd's. It was Vanden Huevel’s first Pro 2wd championship of his 30-year career.
Bad Break Leaves Douglas Sidelined in Chula Vista
Hord fills in for veteran driver
 |
 |
Scott Douglas headed to Chula Vista, Calif. on September 13-14 with a nine point lead in the championship standings. However, hope for a title in 2008 might have come to a violent end before the weekend got underway.
The Southern California resident was taking part in Friday's practice session when he attempted to launch off the finish line tabletop jump. His AMSOIL Ford F-150 grabbed too much air and nosed into the ground, causing the truck to propel an estimated 20 feet high and flip numerous times before coming to a standstill in a twisted lump of metal and fiberglass. Inside the truck, Douglas was not much better as his left leg took a majority of the impact. After getting hauled out of the truck, he was taken to a local hospital. With a large amount of swelling, doctors were able to stabilize the leg, but determined that he had two small fractures in his lower leg and one in his foot. The major damage was done to the upper leg and knee. Douglas went through a successful surgery on Monday to repair the broken leg and kneecap. A timeline for his return to action has not yet been determined.
“We made some suspension changes heading into the weekend that really worked well,” said Douglas after the crash. “We went out in practice with a damp track and the Kumho Tires really hooked up. My confidence with the truck was at an all-time high. On that lap, we came through the quads, cleanly cleared the triple and headed for the tabletop. For that brief moment I felt invincible, but then found out that I wasn’t.”
On the track, AMSOIL Pro Lite driver Chad Hord pulled double duty over the weekend by filling in for Douglas in the Pro 4. CORR allowed Hord to drive the #7 Ford F-150 and compete for championship points only after he pitted for one full lap. Despite the handicap, Hord was on the track to accumulate as many championship points as possible in the hope that Douglas can join the chase again at the AMSOIL Dominator Desert Challenge in Primm, Nev. October 25-26. Hord battled with the field and finished 11th on Saturday and 12th on Sunday. While Douglas fell out of the points lead, he still sits third, just 40 points behind the leader.
“Thanks go to Chad for filling in for me in a moment’s notice,” said Douglas. “He did a great job on the track and being an AMSOIL-sponsored driver, it showed what great teamwork can accomplish.”
“Scott took a really hard hit and I was honored when they came over to ask if I could drive the truck,” said Hord. “I had never driven a Pro 4 before, and if Scott and (crew chief) Bill Smith had the confidence in me to do it, I said ‘you bet.’ Bill put together a good game plan, got me comfortable in the truck and was a big help on the radio during the race. I won’t get too comfortable as I expect to see Scott back behind the wheel in Primm.”
Hord did fare better in his full time job as a Pro Lite driver. On Saturday, he was forced to start dead last after he was unable to qualify because of mechanical problems. Once the green flag fell, Hord went on a tear with the live SPEED cameras rolling, moving from 25th all the way up to third by the end of the race. On Sunday, Hord qualified second and was credited with a fifth place showing, picking up valuable points as the championship leaders dropped out or finished behind him. The 2006 class champion moved into fifth in the points standings.
In Pro 2, Mike Oberg had his AMSOIL/Kumho truck pointed in the right direction. Despite a broken shock that put him out of the race on Saturday, Oberg came back strong on Sunday after reconfiguring the truck’s sway arm. Qualifying 12th, Oberg quickly got on the gas and was sitting in sixth just four laps into the race. Contact from another driver brought out a black flag for Oberg on lap five after a 2" steel bar was knocked loose and was considered a safety issue by CORR. After pitting to get the bar removed, Oberg returned to the track with most of the field in front of him. The Eagle River, Wis. driver quickly worked his way around the field and by the time the competition yellow came out, Oberg was back into the top 12. With one lap remaining, Oberg moved past five more trucks to finish sixth.
“I don’t think anyone passed more trucks out there than I did,” said Oberg following Sunday’s race. “I was really comfortable in the truck today. It’s a shame everyone thinks they have to smash their way to the front. We had a great setup today and we know we are headed in the right direction for Primm. I can’t wait to get there.”
AMSOIL is the Exclusive Official Oil of Championship Off Road Racing. The next CORR event will be the AMSOIL Dominator Desert Challenge in Primm, Nev. on October 25-26. Sunday's race from Chula Vista will air on NBC on October 5. Primm's events will air live on SPEED and NBC.
AMSOIL Re-Signs World Champion
Wanderscheid agrees to three year extension
AMSOIL INC., The First in Synthetics, has signed a three-year contract extension with three-time AMSOIL Eagle River Snowmobile Derby World Champion P.J. Wanderscheid.
AMSOIL has been the title sponsor and exclusive oil provider for Wanderscheid since the 2004-05 season. In 2006, Wanderscheid became only the third person to win three Eagle River World Championships. This year, Wanderscheid will be focused on becoming the first to win the world-famous derby a fourth time.
“P.J. is an excellent ambassador for AMSOIL and the sport of oval ice racing,” said Jeremy Meyer, AMSOIL Race Program Manager. “It’s more than just the results on the track with him, it’s about the countless hours he spends promoting the sport and his sponsors away from the race trailer. He is a true asset to AMSOIL.”
Wanderscheid Racing has 66 career wins and 15 series points championships. In 2008, they won the WSA Pro Open and Pro Champ classes and finished third overall.
“AMSOIL is an excellent company to work with,” said Wanderscheid. “AMSOIL provides us with the best products on the market and the necessary protection our sleds demand. We are excited to be carrying the AMSOIL flag for three more years.”
Scheuring Speed Sports Signs Makita
Industrial Tool manufacturer joins successful snocross team
Scheuring Speed Sports is pleased to announce a new marketing partnership with Makita Industrial Power Tools. The new deal replaces a long time partnership with Red Bull, and the top level snocross team will be known as the AMSOIL/Air Force/Makita team.
“I am excited to be partnering with the premier industrial tool manufacturer in the world,” said team owner Steve Scheuring. “Using Makita Industrial Power Tools on our race team for the past 10 years has been a very positive experience. Our race environment could be best described as one of the toughest in all forms of racing. Racing and testing in snow with temperatures reaching subzero at times puts all our equipment to the test. All of our Makita Tools have passed the test with flying colors. This is going to be a great year for the AMSOIL/Air Force/Makita snocross team.”
Scheuring Speed Sports has been testing for the past few months for the first round of the new ISOC series, which will open at the AMSOIL Duluth National in Duluth, Minn. on Thanksgiving weekend.
Rinker Wins National Championship
AMSOIL powerboat driver picks up another title
Team AMSOIL powerboat driver Terry Rinker marked the Labor Day weekend with a successful run at the 25th O.P.C. National Championship races in Kankakee, Ill.
Rinker took part in the festivities, which was not a ChampBoat sanctioned race, by competing in the Modified Unlimited class. Rinker earned the National Championship title driving the AMSOIL-sponsored #10 boat to a strong victory. The AMSOIL boat started on the pole and led the field for all 15 laps to secure the victory. This National Championship win increases the AMSOIL team’s APBA national high points lead in the Mod-U class with just one race remaining. The final race will be held in Florida in mid-October.
AMSOIL team driver Randy Rinker finished a respectable fifth after suffering a propeller failure midway through the 15-lap race.
Terry Rinker is leading the F1 ChampBoat Series points championship. AMSOIL is also the Official Oil of ChampBoat.
Hurricane Ike Forces Race Rescheduling
ChampBoat events to be rescheduled
World class powerboat racers and organizers suffered a significant blow from Hurricane Ike as it devastated a massive area of South Texas, the home of many powerboat racers, organizers and rescue personnel.
John Schubert, president of SPORT, the organizer of several Sport/Champ2 Texas events, including one scheduled for this weekend in Orange, Texas stated, “Our family came out ok from the storm, but most of South Texas was hit hard and is still without power, forcing us to cancel the Orange, Texas race. We hope to reschedule it for later this season, but if that doesn’t work out, we’ll have to wait until 2009.”
ChampBoat Chief of Rescue Mike Gibbs suffered significant damage to his home, forcing his family to stay with friends.
“Our side of Houston (eastern) was hit exceptionally hard and there are still tens of thousands without power, so the last thing on our minds right now is boat racing.”
The ChampBoat Series also was forced to cancel the Tempe Grand Prix scheduled for September 27-28.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to all our friends in Texas,” said ChampBoat Director Mike Schriefer. “When disasters hit, it puts the sport of powerboat racing into perspective. It’s a shame, however, as we have worked so hard the past two years on Tempe, so we’ll really be looking forward to rescheduling the Tempe event for 2009, which will quickly become one of our highest profile events.”
The ChampBoat Series now directs its focus on the F1 ChampBoat and Champ2 season finale at the inaugural Grand Prix of Naples November 1-2. AMSOIL is the Official Oil of ChampBoat.
Smith Wins Again
Team AMSOIL late model driver takes fifth checkered flag of season
AMSOIL late model driver Brady Smith racked up his fifth victory of 2008 on August 30 at the Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn.
Smith sported a fast car all night as he won his heat race and the dash to earn the pole position for the $5,000 to win World Dirt Racing League (WDRL) main event. The Solon Springs, Wis. native then swapped the lead on several occasions with Chris Simpson during the 40-lap A-Main before guiding his AMSOIL race car to the winner’s circle ahead of Chris and Chad Simpson, Justin Fegers and Eric Pember. The WDRL triumph was the second straight series victory for Smith as he also won the rain-postponed “Masters” on August 1 at the Cedar Lake Speedway.
Smith is scheduled to race at the Farley Speedway in Farley, Iowa on Friday and Saturday night as part of the Yankee Dirt Track Classic. Smith will also be in Knoxville, Iowa September 25-27 to defend his Knoxville Late Model Nationals title.
AMSOIL Rider Second Overall in Finale
AMA Outdoor Nationals wraps up in Steel City
The 2008 AMA National Motocross Championships wrapped up for the first time on a Saturday at the Steel City Raceway in Delmont, Pa, and although weather reports leading up to the race indicated a deluge, no rain reared its ugly head.
AMSOIL Lites rider Jake Weimer had a solid day at Steel City. He worked his way up to sixth in the first moto and found himself in a battle for third in the second moto before finishing fourth. Weimer finished second overall for the day and finished the season fourth in points with 321.
“The second moto, I had a pretty good start, and there were bikes going down everywhere,” Weimer said. “I was behind [Brett] Metcalfe forever, and I felt like I needed to get around him, but I wasn’t making it happen. I kind of got stuck in his pace, and then [Nico] Izzi got by both of us, and then I finally decided that I needed to make something happen with Brett. We ended up coming together, and he went down, and it wasn’t really intentional, but it was one of those racing situations where I thought I had it, and he thought he had it, and we came together, and unfortunately, he went down.”
Rookie Blake Wharton had a great come-from-behind ride in the first moto, finishing just behind Weimer in seventh. Wharton grabbed his second holeshot of his short career to start the second moto, but went down in a slick spot a couple of turns into the race and was forced to come from the back of the pack. He finished sixth overall.
Australian Dan Reardon was disappointed with his results at the season finale, but he’s happy that he has a healthy season under his belt so that he knows what to expect next year. Reardon went 13-11 for 12th overall and finished out the season 11th in the standings.
Josh Grant grabbed the holeshot in the opening moto and led the first six laps before losing the lead to eventual winner Ryan Dungey. He ran second until he experienced a mechanical failure with about three laps remaining in the race. In the second moto, Grant again started at the front and ran second for the first few laps before eventually finishing the race in eighth. Grant ended the season ninth in points despite racing only half the series, and he earned two podiums – at Colorado and Washougal.
The GEICO Powersports/AMSOIL/Honda team will take some time off before beginning 2009 testing and returning to action for the 10th anniversary of the U.S. Open of Supercross at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. on October 10-11.
Holy Hannibal!
Lovell Racing battles elements in WE-Rock Finals
The Lovell Racing Team showed up in Hannibal, Mo. ready to do battle at the 2008 WE-Rock Finals in the rain, mud and rock of Hannibal Rocks Off-Road Park. Unable to make the trip was the team’s guiding light, spotter Roger Lovell. For the first time, Brad Lovell would be competing without his brother, but under the capable guidance of longtime rock crawler Sean Lazzelle.
Lazzelle’s confidence was immediately put to the test as he guided the AMSOIL crawler across one of the most treacherous courses ever created. Lovell was forced to pilot the #232 Fabtech/AMSOIL/Ford Ranger over a rock spine with a 12’ cliff on one side and a 30’ cliff on the other. The spine was so narrow that the tires had to completely hang off either side. As long as everything was navigated correctly, the inevitable crash off the rock could be saved with some throttle action. With great confidence, the pair took to the course and flawlessly negotiated the dangers.
Any racing team needs teamwork, the right vehicle and a little luck. Luck decided to leave the team after their initial success. On the second course, the team had the finish gates in sight, but the crawler stalled just as the truck slid off a sizeable drop and precisely when Lovell needed some horsepower. The result was an end-over-end roll that left the Ford Ranger helplessly “turtled” and unable to finish. Registering scores on only three out of four courses, Lovell Racing was tied for seventh at the end of the first day.
Rain, mud and fog welcomed competitors on day two, so the team concentrated on surviving the courses and taking cones when necessary. Lovell launched the truck up the first rock slope and found just enough traction to break the rear gear set and failed to finish.
The #232 roared back to life on course A1 as Lovell became the first and only driver to complete the course. Team Lovell was patient and stuck to their plan. Their performance was good enough to gain five places in three courses and put them in second with only the final round to go.
“I think most people out there would agree that we have the best climbing vehicle,” said Lovell. “The engineers at Fabtech have built us the best suspension out there, and if you can keep the BFG’s on the rocks, they will keep you moving forward.”
While others found defeat in the mud, Lovell and Lazzelle gracefully launched up the bonus climb on the final course and made fast work of the remaining gates to handily finish the competition in second.
Lovell Rock Racing will compete in its last 2008 event on September 20 as XRRA holds its U.S. Finals in Jellico, Tenn. Roger Lovell will defend his 2007 U.S. Championship in the 32 Dirt Logic/AMSOIL/Ranger and Brad will hunt for the top spot in #232 after finishing the 2008 XRRA season in third place.
Camburg Shows Helping Hand
Vegas to Reno more than winning race
Coming into the Best in the Desert's "Vegas to Reno" race, everyone knows the difficulties and challenges ahead of them. With more than 450 miles of race course, it has some of the most technical and abusive terrain in the United States.
Jason Campbell, driving with Scott Zindroski and Morgan Wilson in the Camburg/AMSOIL Toyota, was last off the line in his class as he faced a rear starting position. The first 80 miles featured some of the race’s roughest terrains and it showed early as a large number of trucks and buggies succumbed to the elements.
The AMSOIL/Camburg truck was able to overcome a 20 minute traffic jam and numerous stops to help downed racers during the early stages of the race to stay on course. At one point, the truck pulled over to help a stranded buggy that had run out of gas. The crew filled an eight-ounce water bottle with gas from their fuel tank about 30 times to get the buggy restarted.
After they made it over the 8,500 foot summit, Jerry Zaiden took over driving with Brad Hisgen and Justin Held along for the ride. With 200+ miles to go, Zaiden knew they had a chance since half the field typically fails to finish. After helping more stranded racers, the Toyota was stuck in 4-LO and had to make it to the next scheduled pit stop at a high speed of 27 mph.
Zaiden pulled into Pit 9 and the crew refueled and reset the ECU, which allowed the Toyota Tundra to get out of the lower gear. With only 110 miles left to the finish line, Zaiden set a fast pace to the end.
The AMSOIL/Camburg Toyota crossed the finish line sixth in its class and 99th overall in 16 hours, 57 minutes. Out of 202 vehicles that started the grueling race, only 51 percent finished the event. In uncommon fashion, all of the Class 8100 trucks, the same class as the Camburg team, finished the 450 mile race.
The Camburg/AMSOIL Toyota will also be a hit with video gamers starting next week. A new game called Baja: Edge of Control is set to be released across the country next Monday. AMSOIL will be receiving exposure through its partnership with the Camburg Racing team. Camburg Racing is a desert race team that competes in the Baja 1000, Baja 500 and other Best in the Desert races. The game is based on the Baja 1000 and includes more than 95 different tracks that replicate the 1000, as well as the Baja 250 and the Baja 500. |

Teague Takes Three in June - 2008
Team AMSOIL off-shore driver wins short and long races
Ocean City, Md.
The AMSOIL Offshore Team traveled 3,000 miles to attend the OPA Triple Crown season opener in Ocean City, Md. on May 30 and June 1. The event was well-attended, boasting a record 54 teams and huge crowds.
Saturday storms made for rough seas in the Atlantic and prevented many teams from testing, but Bob Teague and his crew used the weather to test some new rough-water setups. The testing paid off during the main event late Sunday afternoon as the seas were rough. A radical storm that passed through on Saturday night left its mark with residual rollers on Sunday and the big waves were wreaking havoc with the offshore teams. At race time, Team AMSOIL, with Teague and Paul Whittier in the cockpit, took the green flag on a course with five to six foot waves. Immediately a fierce battle ensued with Team AMSOIL and Motley Crew running side-by-side, crashing through and over the waves and getting some big air. Team AMSOIL took the lead from the start, only to be passed by Motley Crew. Before the race was over, the two boats exchanged the lead four times with neither boat leading by more than five lengths. On the final turn of the race, Teague picked an unexpected outside line, carrying superior speed into the final front straightaway for the win.
Sunny Isles Beach, Fla.
The AMSOIL Offshore racing team traveled to Sunny Isles Beach, Fla. last weekend to compete in the inaugural OSS Don Aronow Memorial Offshore Powerboat Challenge.
The first event of the weekend was an endurance race from Miami to Bimini and back. Team AMSOIL entered the 2008 Bimini Run and was looking to set an official OSS speed record. Twenty-two boats in various classes and configurations started the long range race. The boats were started at ten second intervals and were each timed separately. Team AMSOIL drew the 10th starting spot. During the 106 plus mile race, Teague and Whittier ran at a consistent pace, passing all of the boats that started ahead of Team AMSOIL with the exception of one from the Unlimited class. Team AMSOIL finished as the second fastest boat overall and placed as the first officially-OSS-sanctioned boat, with a completion time of 1 hour, 4 minutes and 47 seconds. Team AMSOIL’s average speed during the record run was 98.381 miles per hour. This excellent performance resulted in Team AMSOIL being declared the winner and record holder of the OSS Cat Lite Class for this event.
The water and wind conditions changed overnight and some adjustments had to be made based off what was learned on Saturday. Prop selections were adjusted and weight was moved in the boat to accommodate the rougher conditions.
For the OSS points race, Team AMSOIL was assigned the number two lane in the starting position with Peppers on the inside and Team PropStop.net and Popeye’s Famous Chicken in the next two lanes to the right. When the pace boat threw the green flag, a battle ensued with Peppers down the first straightaway and into turn number one. The battle continued down the back stretch with Team AMSOIL gaining momentum on the inside lane. Peppers pulled in front of Team AMSOIL at turn four and Bob Teague and Paul Whittier intentionally drove through Peppers’ rooster tail to carry speed on an outside line. The maneuver resulted in Team AMSOIL passing Peppers at the exit of the turn. From there, Team AMSOIL continued to extend the lead over the Cat Lite fleet. During the race, Bob and Paul continued to dominate the class and ended up approximately 2 1/2 miles ahead of the second place boat. Team AMSOIL completed the 13 lap race in a total time of 46 and a half minutes with an average speed of 95.33 miles per hour.
The Bimini Record run and OSS race at Sunny Isles bring Team AMSOIL's win total to five in a row. Currently, Team AMSOIL is in first place in the point’s race in POPRA, OPA Triple Crown, and OSS. Up next for Team AMSOIL will be an SBI race in Sarasota, Fla. on the Fourth of July weekend.
Douglas Doubles Up on NBC July 27th & August 17th 2008
Super Team driver takes second win, point’s lead in Pomona
Scott Douglas told the live NBC audience following his first win of the season in Chula Vista, Calif. (July 27) that once the wins started, they were going to come in bunches. The AMSOIL/Kumho Tire Pro 4 driver may now be seen as a prophet after his second win of the season in Pomona, Calif. on August 17.
Douglas entered Saturday's race just one point behind Carl Renezeder in the Pro 4 standings. After Renezeder was black flagged, Douglas took advantage and battled for second with Johnny Greaves. Unfortunately for Douglas, CORR officials thought he wasn't playing nice and gave him a black flag after Greaves crossed in front of the AMSOIL Pro 4, causing both trucks to lose ground. Douglas was able to finish seventh, and he entered Sunday's race tied for the points lead.
On Sunday, the black flag was once again flying strong in the Pro 4 race. This time, however, Douglas kept his nose clean and took advantage of the over aggressive driving by his competitors. Douglas sat just behind the race leaders, who were slamming into one another, and waited for the right opportunity to take the lead. Renezeder and Curt LeDuc banged into each other on lap 16, giving Douglas a narrow opening to take the lead. LeDuc was black flagged and Renezeder dropped to third after AMSOIL/Red Bull driver Steve Barlow made the move into second. Douglas picked up his second win of the season and leads the championship chase by nine points.
“I kept thinking about putting my nose into the mix between Carl and Curt,” said Douglas after the race. “But something clicked inside my head to just let them battle it out and take advantage when I get the opportunity. The next thing you know, I had an opening and I was gone.”
In the Pro Lite class, AMSOIL Super Team member Chad Hord also picked up his second win of the year on Saturday, dominating the class on the tight Pomona track. The 2006 Pro Lite champion finished fifth on Sunday and moved into sixth in the points race.
“We had the extra caution because of an accident,” said Hord, “and I saw them watering the track again. I knew right then that it was my time and that I wasn’t going to lose that race.”
AMSOIL is the Exclusive Official Oil of Championship Off Road Racing. The series turns back to Chula Vista, Calif. for rounds 11 and 12 on Saturday, September 13 and Sunday, September 14. The Saturday race will air live on SPEED. Round 10 from Pomona, featuring Scott Douglas' win, will air Sunday, September 14 on NBC.
Rinker Regains Lead in Michigan August 9th - 10th. 2008
Rough waters can’t slow former champ
Despite extremely difficult conditions on the St. Clair River on August 9-10, AMSOIL ChampBoat driver Terry Rinker was able to secure his fourth straight podium finish and took hold of the overall points lead for the first time in 2008.
The three-time champion joined the ChampBoat Series in Algonac, Mich. for the fifth round of racing. Held on the longest course of the season (1.5 miles) and settled just north of downtown Detroit, the race became a survival test for most drivers due to winds that reached 28 knots and served up two foot swells. It became so rough that officials dropped the race from 50 laps to 35 before deciding to drop down to 30 during the race.
Rinker made the most of the dangerous conditions, running a conservative race and finishing the 30-lap feature in second behind winner Tim Seebold. His second place finish follows up his win last week in St. Louis and vaults him into the overall points lead with 2693 points, 49 points ahead of former leader Shaun Torrente. The Miami, Fla. driver barrel rolled his boat on lap 16, stopping the race and taking him out of the points lead.
"It's been a long time since we've raced in conditions that crazy," said Rinker. "The AMSOIL crew had a good set up today, but the weather was the biggest obstacle. We are excited about regaining the points lead and look forward to a great battle for the championship between Seebold and Torrente."
Robert Dinicolantonio did a nice job filling in for regular driver Randy Rinker in the #41 AMSOIL/Rinker Racing boat, finishing ninth.
The next round of the 2008 F1-ChampBoat Series will take place on the weekend of September 27-28 as the series heads west to Tempe, Ariz. for the “Tempe Grand Prix.”
The Flying Dutchman Zeroes in on WSORR Championship
August 8th - 9th, 2008
AMSOIL off-road racer holds lead heading into final showdown
Dan Vanden Heuvel Sr. brought his AMSOIL-sponsored Chevy Silverado to Bark River, Mich. August 8-9 with thoughts of winning the PRO-2WD championship. Already having won three times this season, Vanden Heuvel had a 36-point lead over second place driver Evan Evans in the championship race. The team’s goal for the weekend would be to stay out of trouble and finish both races on the lead lap.
Saturday’s start saw Kevin Probst grab the holeshot and the win, while Vanden Heuvel grabbed the second spot by the end of lap one. While Probst needed the win to stay in the championship fight, the #77 AMSOIL truck just needed to have a solid, trouble-free race. And that’s exactly what happened. After 10 laps, Vanden Heuvel finished in a solid third place.
“I wanted to race for the win, but we weren’t going to beat Kevin today,” commented Vanden Heuvel. “His truck was really hooked up. After Evan passed me, I tried to make a move to get back around him, but I backed off. It could have become a bad situation, where either of us could have wrecked, and I didn’t need that. Kevin and Evan finished just in front of me, but that’s okay. I wanted to go for the win, but winning the championship is more important.”
On Sunday, Vanden Heuvel continued his title trek with a clean start as he watched Probst and Ross Hoek battle it out for the first few laps. Rhonda Konitzer was also able to get out in front of Vanden Heuvel, but he knew Konitzer had run a limited schedule and didn’t figure into the championship battle. By the start of the third lap, Vanden Heuvel had his #77 AMSOIL Chevy running in third, his finishing position.
The Flying Dutchman has finished on the podium in every round of racing during the 2008 WSORR season. With just two rounds remaining in the quest for the 2008 WSORR PRO-2WD Championship, Vanden Heuvel has a 32 point lead over Probst.
The final weekend of racing for the Flying Dutchman Off-Road Team in the 2008 World Series of Off-Road Racing is the BorgWarner Off-Road World Championship August 29-31 in Crandon, Wis. AMSOIL Super Team members Scott Douglas, Mike Oberg and Chad Hord will also travel from the West Coast to take part in the Crandon weekend of racing.
Smith Speeds Through Schedule August 15th - 16th, 2008
Team AMSOIL late model driver finishes sixth and third on recent swing
Brady Smith is settling in as a consistently fast driver as he heads into the fall racing season, recently taking home two top 10 finishes on his tour through Tennessee and Arkansas.
The AMSOIL late model driver invaded the Batesville Speedway in Locust Grove, Ark. August 15-16 for the annual “Topless 100,” which was taped by the cameras of SPEED Channel for the first time.
The event was shortened to a one-day, $25,000 to win show on Saturday after storms pounded the area on Friday. When the action heated up, Smith laid down the second-fastest lap during time trials and later won his heat race. During the “100,” Smith pushed his AMSOIL/Bloomquist car briefly into the lead before settling for a third place finish.
Next, Smith entered the “Scorcher 100” at the Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap, Tenn. on August 20-21. On the first night of racing, Smith ran second in his heat before driving his #2 AMSOIL car to a sixth place finish in the main. On Thursday, Smith won his heat race and took home the runner-up spot in the World of Outlaws-sanctioned event.
Smith will have one final tune-up before he takes part in the World 100 at the Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio on September 5-6. This Friday night, Smith will attend the WDRL event at Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn.
Race Tightens Up for Teague August 16th - 17th 2008
Wins becoming commonplace for offshore team
Team AMSOIL traveled to Orange Beach, Ala. on August 16-17 to compete in the “Thunder on the Gulf” race sanctioned by the Offshore Super Series (OSS). This race came just two weeks after the OSS race in Kenner, La., where Team AMSOIL was leading the race before snagging a crab trap that resulted in the team having to pull off a lap early.
In Orange Beach, tens of thousands of spectators lined the beaches and filled the high-rise condominiums to view the testing on Saturday and races on Sunday. The rough sea conditions in the gulf made for some spectacular racing.
During the first Cat Lite heat, Team AMSOIL was making a charge on the first place boat when an engine sensor went into “guardian” mode, causing the boat to slow. Team AMSOIL finished the heat in second place behind Peppers.
Team AMSOIL returned to the pits to make repairs and adjustments and then headed out for the second heat. Team AMSOIL was assigned to lane two for the start, between Peppers and Popeye's. After the green flag dropped at the start, all three boats ran side-by-side towards the first turn. Popeye's pinched the Team AMSOIL boat from the outside, and Peppers hopped out into their path. A minor collision transpired with the Team AMSOIL boat being hit on both sides. Bob Teague and Paul Whittier took evasive actions, which cost them precious seconds on the race course. Although Team AMSOIL was able to run some faster laps than the first place boat, there was not enough time to catch them while also battling boat traffic on the race course. Team AMSOIL finished the weekend second overall to continue their 2008 podium success.
Teague is scheduled to participate in the OSS race in Lake Cumberland, Ky. on Labor Day Weekend.
Millville Marks Rookie Debut for Blake Wharton
Rookie pulls holeshot in second pro motocross race
Every year at the Millville round of the AMA National Motocross Championship, the newest and brightest stars make their debuts, up from the amateur ranks at the previous week’s Loretta Lynn’s Amateur National Championship presented by AMSOIL and into the pro class.
Last year, that rider for the Geico/AMSOIL team was Trey Canard. Canard finished fourth in the second moto at Millville in 2007 before going on to win the Lites East Supercross Championship.
This year, the team’s understudy making his pro debut was 17-year-old Blake Wharton of Pilot Point, Texas. Coming into Millville, Wharton expected to be in the top 10, but hoped to be in the top five. Although he fell twice in the first moto, he still managed to finish 10th.
“The first moto showed me a lot,” Wharton said. “My times were pretty good, and I was coming from the back. I went down twice, but still managed a top 10. That showed me that the next moto, if I just got a good start and put myself in a good position, that good things could happen, and that’s what happened.”
In the second moto, Wharton fought his way through from a decent start near the front of the pack to run second in the early going behind Ryan Dungey. Wharton eventually finished fourth in the moto and fifth overall.
“I was just riding my own race out there,” Wharton said. “I just got a start in the top five and then I just rode my own race. I wasn’t trying to beat any one person or block anyone or try to pass anyone back or taking any chances. Ryan Villopoto was going his speed, which is faster than everyone, so it really made no sense for me to do anything dumb and try and block him. What I did was finish up the race in fourth, and that was one of my goals.”
Jake Weimer had a decent start in the first moto, but fell right away, putting him well behind the leaders. The second moto result was better, but Weimer wasn’t as happy with his ride the second time out. He finished fourth overall with a 7-5.
“I should’ve gotten a good start, but basically I let off when I shouldn’t have in the first turn, and I ended up with a not-very-good start,” Weimer said.
After sitting out the last few rounds with an injured shoulder, Aussie Dan Reardon made his return at Millville. In the first moto, he ran around the tail end of the top 10 for most of the race, eventually finishing 11th. In the second moto, however, Reardon dropped out after an early fall tweaked his injured shoulder.
And finally, the top single moto of the day for the AMSOIL team went to Josh Grant, who grabbed third place in the opening moto. During the second moto, however, he started inside the top five, moved up to fourth and then dropped out of the race after lap six due to illness.
Grant is now tied with Canard in the championship chase and is less than 20 points out of sixth place despite missing the first five rounds. Canard is out for the remainder of the season with a broken leg.
The Geico Powersports/AMSOIL/Honda team now heads to Delmont, Pa. this weekend for the final round of the AMA National Motocross Championship. AMSOIL is the Official Oil of the AMA Outdoor Nationals.
Trey Canard Injury Update
Interview with Transworld MX
Courtesy of Transworld Motorcross
Read the interview below to get filled in on how Trey has been doing since breaking his femur.
While there were a few riders that returned to action this weekend, there were still a few others that were either put on the sidelines or already there. One such rider that we ran into was Team Geico Powersports/AMSOIL/Honda’s Trey Canard. After having an up and down national season, Trey broke his femur at Washougal a few weeks ago and is on the mend. He was on hand to check out the races and show some support for his team. We caught up with him on Saturday…
Just take us through what happened to you…
It happened at Washougal on the last lap. I came around and a lapper didn’t notice that he was getting lapped. I came around, and I think he finally realized that I was there and tried to get out of the way. I just hit his back tire and that was the end of it. It was a stupid little crash, but unfortunately sometimes that’s how it goes.
It’s your rookie year, so is it disappointing to have this happen to you already?
It could be a lot more disappointing. I could be in the points chase or at least in a decent position. I mean it is a bummer to break my femur, but it could have gone in a lot of other hard ways, and it could be a lot worse. I know that I always come back stronger from my injuries, and it’s definitely going to make me a better person in a lot of ways since I have to wait and not ride. You don’t realize how much you love something until you can’t do it, so I’m hoping it makes me a better rider when I return. That’s all I can really hope for.
Was it a pretty scary injury?
It was really scary. When I got up and tried to move, I felt it wiggle around and I kind of went into shock. Surgery and being in the hospital for so long just isn’t fun, but I know that’s part of it and that’s really been my first overnight stay in the hospital; I’ve been pretty fortunate. It definitely will make me think of myself as being very fortunate, not take anything for granted, and just work that much harder.
Did you have a roommate in the hospital?
No, my mom just stayed with me and I had some cool nurses in Portland. That’s about it, just hanging out with the Morphine drip.
How long until you’re back to 100 percent and will they take the rod out?
They said that if it’s not bothering me, then I should keep it in. But if it starts to bother me, then I’ll get it taken out. It’s going to be a pretty long road, but the brace did save my knee, which if that had been injured, it could have been six to eight months. I’m not going to worry about it too much and just take the three months that they said I’ll have and try to make myself better. I’ll just stay in the gym as much as I can and just do a lot of rehab.

Sudden Impact Dominates in Great White North --- June 2008
Back-to-back sweeps for AMSOIL T-Maxx
Canada may well be known best for its red-uniformed Mounties, strong beer and even stronger winters. Canada is also becoming well-known for its thrilling and action-packed monster truck events as the Edge Motorsports tour has been turning out impressive events and turning in equally impressive attendance figures. And at the heart of it all is the Sudden Impact Racing/AMSOIL team, represented by drivers Jon Zimmer and John Killinger.
Zimmer showed off his experience this past Friday at the Steelman Center in Guelph, Ontario, as the AMSOIL T-Maxx² machine ripped through the field, taking wins in all four competitions: wheelie, donut, racing and freestyle.
The celebrations at the Steelman Center would be short-lived, however, as the duo would have to drive overnight to Oshawa, Ontario for a Saturday-only showdown. The long, overnight trip didn’t faze Zimmer, who proved he had what it took to go the distance, once again sweeping the evening’s competitions. Zimmer would take down the heavily-sponsored Bigfoot truck in the racing finals. Zimmer’s only other significant competition Saturday night would come from teammate Killinger and the Sudden Impact/AMSOIL truck who challenged quite seriously for the donut contest win.

Lovell’s Back on Top --- June 2008
Rock crawling brothers conquer Cedar City
After a setback in Albuquerque, N.M. the Lovell Racing Team regrouped and headed off to the rocks of Cedar City, Utah. Three Peaks Off-Road Park would be the location of choice for the second event in the 2008 WE-Rock Western Series.
As the sun warmed the rocks a record number of Pro Modified teams slowly trickled into the event site. An adventurous excitement filled the air that can be best described as a realization that this was a return to old school rock crawling. The courses were tight, technical and consisted of awe inspiring climbs and amazing drops.
Brad and Roger Lovell got off to a quick lead on the first course with a successful run, but the first day of competition would still present challenge. After watching fellow competitors struggle with the bonus line on the B1 course, the brothers decided to take the risk and go for the hard line. Brad carefully lined up the Fabtech/AMSOIL/Ford Ranger and Roger worked to place rocks in the perfect location. The Ranger bridged the enormous gap and as the nose pointed skyward Brad settled into the driver’s seat and lost his view of the rocks below. With Brad driving by nothing but feel and the direction of Roger, he slowly tip-toed the Ranger through the gates. The gamble worked and Team Lovell took a commanding lead over fellow competitors. At the end of the day, the brothers found themselves with a six point lead over veteran rock star Jason Paulie.
“Brad did and incredible job. If he only knew how close he was to the edge” said Roger.
Day two brought new challenges and the W.E. Rock courses proved to be brutal on all competitors. Brad and Roger had another near flawless day. The course that was set for the final round was the longest of the day and would push every team to the limit. The course also had two bonus lines, but every team stuck to the regular course, except for Paulie. Careful planning paid off, and Brad piloted the Ranger through gate after gate until the final climb. The team knew they had to make the last climb in one shot, and Roger stood back and directed Brad to the perfect line. Like a pilot on a launch pad, Brad stomped on the gas and the BF Goodrich Krawlers pushed the Fabtech Ford to the top of the rock. With a single turn to the right the two carefully crossed the finish gates and captured their second victory in the W.E. Rock Western Series. With back to back first place finishes in a four event series Lovell Racing has a commanding lead.
June 14 will find the Lovell Brothers racing head to head in the Fabtech Ranger and the Dirt Logic Ranger in XRRA round three in their hometown of Colorado Springs, Colo.
